Sasha Kurmaz was born 1986 in Kyiv, Ukraine, where he lives and works today. Kurmaz holds a BFA in design from the National Academy of Managerial Staff of Culture and Arts in Kyiv. Sasha started his artistic practice as a graffiti artist. When he gradually left the medium behind, he kept public space as his main domain and continued to use underground strategies of hacking public space branded by advertisement and private commercial messages. In most of his work he plays a game of de-powering power structures, using both humoristic and conceptual interventions. Sasha is a multidisciplinary artist who works with photography and public intervention, video and produces photo zines. Kurmaz has participated in many international group exhibitions and festivals, including exhibitions at the Zamek Ujazdowski Art Centre 2013 (Poland), ZKM Museum of Contemporary Art, Karlsruhe 2013 (Germany), Vienna Ku?nstlerhaus 2014 (Austria), MuseumsQuartier Wien 2014 (Austria), the 19th Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography, Biel/Bienne 2015 (Switzerland), Saatchi Gallery 2015 (UK), and ℅  Berlin 2016 (Germany).

His work has been published in a wide range of international magazines, including FOAM, Krytyka Polityczna, YET, Vice, Liberation, Bloomberg Businessweek, Rolling Stones, Süddeutsche Zeitung.
